A redescription of the genus Mustelus was undertaken in order to resolve the taxonomic confusion surrounding it. Metric characteristics, number of vertebrae, size and form of the teeth, colour, biology and geographical distribution are considered in description of the species M. mustelus (Linnaeus, 1758), Mustelus asterias Cloquet 1821, and M. mediterraneus new species, the several synonyms for each of which are listed. General remarks on each are made, and a final dichotomous key for identification is presented. |

Eleven spp of cephalopod were collected with the Isaacs Kidd midwater trawl during the Polymede expeditions on the N.O. 'Jean Charcot' in the western Mediterranean and in the vicinity of Cap Finisterre. The most abundant sp was Histioteuthis reversa. 14 spp were collected with the bottom trawl Marinovitch in the western part of the Alboran Sea. The most abundant mesobenthic sp was Bathypolypus sponsalis. The specimens, very similar to the type specimen from the Atlantic, are very different from the animals captured in the Catalonian Sea. |

110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify. |

Cervera atlantica, a small stoloniferan octocoral, was described as Cornularia atlantica by James Yate Johnson in 1861 from Funchal, Madeira. It then remained unrecognized until 1972 when I discovered it on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. I have since confirmed its existence at the type locality and have traced its distribution around Madeira, throughout the Canary Islands, and on Portuguese and English coasts. In the Mediterranean Sea, I have found it along Spanish and French coasts, among the Balearic Islands and on the coast of Cyprus. Cervera atlantica is cryptic and photophobic, living under stones in shallow water (usually at 0-2 m) or in crevices and caves in massive intertidal rocks, protected from direct sunlight. Intolerant of rough water, it... |

Twelve species of Pinnotheridae from Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul States, Brazil, are redeseribed and illustrated; a key of identification is presented. Clypeasterophilus stebbingi Rathbun, 1918; Pinnotheres garthi Fenucci, 1975 and Pinnixa brevipollex Rathbun, 1898 are reported for the first time for Brazil. Clypeaslerophilus stebbingi Rathbun, 1918 and Tumidotheres maculatus Say, 1818, are new record for Santa Catarina. Fabia insularis Melo, I971 and Pinnotheres emiliai Melo, 1971 are revalitaded; Fabia sebastianensis Rodrigues da Costa, 1969; Pinnotheres garthi Fenucci, 1975; Pinnotheres emiliai Melo, 1971 and Pinnixa patagoniensis Rathbun, 1918 are new records for Rio Grande do Sul. The identification of insect fragments showed that the infestation was done, mainly, by Coleoptera of the genus Sitophilus Schnherr, 1838 (Curculionidae) and Rhizoperthadominica (Fabricius, 1792) (Bostrychidae), that are caracteristic of internai infestation, and in lesser percentage by insects charac-teristic of externai infestation, as Crylolestes spp. (Cucujidae), Tribolium spp. (Tene-brionidae), Oryzaephilussurinamensis(Linnacus, 1758) (Cucujidae) and Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius, 1792) (Anobiidae). From the total of recovered and identified insect fragments, 59% were fragments of elytra, 23% of mandibles, and in minor percentage by tarsal segments, claws, tibial spurs, legs, tarsus, eyes, antennae, exuviae and larvae urogomphi. |

The NAHMS Beef '97 Study was designed to provide both participants and the industry with information on the nation's cow-calf population for education and research. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with NAHMS to select a statistically-valid sample yielding 2,713 producers from 23 states. The 23-state target population represented 85.7 percent of U.S. beef cows on January 1, 1997, and 77.6 percent of U.S. beef operations. NASS enumerators collected data for this report via a questionnaire administered on-farm from December 30, 1996, through February 3, 1997. Contact for this paper: David Dargatz |

Section 1 of this report shows demographic changes of the U.S. beef cow-calf industry from a historical perspective from data provided by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and Census of Agriculture. Results of two NAHMS national studies in Section II complete the overview of change in the U.S. beef cow-calf industry during the 5-year period from 1993 to 1997. NAHMS, CHAPA Phase I included data collected from 2,539 cow-calf operations in the 48 continental states via telephone during the fall of 1992. Subsequent data collection was done on operations in 18 states and from producers with five or more beef cows and 50 percent or more of their calf crop born between January 1 and June 30 (spring calving) The 18 states represented 70... |

Além do Citrus, o... |
